FAQs
How can I join the Ensemble?
The Free Readers Ensemble began as a circle of friends with a shared passion for theater, and we have grown our ensemble organically ever since. This foundation of trust and friendship means that new members join us by invitation from within our existing ensemble, and we do not hold open auditions. When a particular play calls for additional actors, we bring in guest artists from our network to collaborate with us. See About Us to learn more about who we are and how we got started.
How do you pick your plays?
Usually in July, the ensemble gets together to discuss the next season. We each bring one or two play ideas. From those ideas we consider the best mix of comedies, dramas, classics and contemporary plays that we feel best showcase the Ensemble. After discussion, we all decide on which eight shows we want to do. Assuming the rights are available, those become our season!
Is it really free?
Yes. These readings are absolutely free to attend. We do have a donation box at the door if you wish to help us defray our costs, but just being there is a great way to support us!
How do you use your donations?
First, we are humbled and grateful for our generous audience donations. They are keeping our labor of love going strong.
Most of our donations go to the plays. Royalties for a one-day reading of a published play usually costs around $150-$175, plus the cost of scripts.
Other expenses include: this website, postage, copies and occasional branded items (tote bags to purchase, shirts for the ensemble for reading days, etc.)
Ensemble Members are not paid; we are just doing this for the love of it!
Also, we are extremely grateful to the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association for letting us use their space, and being so supportive.
