Mae West's controversial 1926 play, Sex, tells the story of Margy LaMont, a sharp-witted sex worker in Montreal, as she navigates the complexities of her life, including her relationship with her pimp and her dreams of a better life and finding true love.
Despite being a commercial smash, the play's risqué subject matter led to a police raid and West's arrest. Her resulting jail time made her a national celebrity, cemented her iconic reputation and paved the way for her eventual success in Hollywood.
The Free Readers Ensemble is pleased to present this significant play, exactly 100 years to the day after its Broadway premiere, April 26, 1926.
Coordinated by Stephanie Samuel and Larry Dahlke
